Dealing with fast weight loss programs and surgeries for teenagers

Adolescence is the period in a person’s life where he/she adjusts to several changes and learns to cope with the new things that are about to come into their lives. It is a time for great expectations and extreme pressure.

Pressures from family, school and social group on top of chemical and hormonal changes to the body are things the typical teenager has to deal with.

Their social groups or kids in their age group can be most savage if they want to. Bullying and ostracism; these are considered normal fare in every middle and high school. We’ve all gone through that stuff so we should be familiar with it – there are popular kids and there are those who are popularly bullied and made fun of.

One of the major achievements in this period of their lives is either to be part of the “in” crowd or the popular group, or just be accepted by the majority. Much of the acceptance and ostracism unfortunately, involves the looks.

This is probably the major reason why most teenagers are so sensitive about their looks. They don’t really want to diet – who’d want to at that age? All they want is to look attractive enough to be invited into the select social group of “beautiful” and popular kids.

This is also the reason why an increasing number of teenagers are developing eating disorders and a number of them are even undergoing surgeries. Most are into various kinds of diet programs that promise great bodies in less than a month.

Some of these procedures do work, but they can get real risky when taken to the extreme. They could lose their lives along with weight in the long run.

This is where parents come in – as guides to show the right way and help their kids make correct choices.

One important thing to remember when dealing with teenagers is do not oppose their choices, instead show your understanding and support. They will confide in you more and you’ll know what goes on in their lives; you may not like those things but at least by knowing, you get a shot at putting a check on their behavior. “Being aware” really has a lot going for it.

If they are really decided in going through surgery AND you can afford it, support them. Be with them when they shop for a good surgeon. Do all this but don’t stop telling them the pros and cons. You could still manage to dissuade them. With kids – who knows?

Given the correct information, teenagers can be logical and rational. That’s why it’s important to make them aware of the choices they are making, and the consequences. Losing weight FAST can be a dangerous thing. Let them read actual accounts of the dangers of going under the knife. Let them see pictures of botched up surgeries and the ones that backfired over time. Again, with kids – who knows?
